Is a year too long to spend on one project?

Do not worry. I am not going to say "You can only do this plan if you are writing a novel." No. That is not the way I do things. If you would rather use your 219-220 words a day and write several short stories, poems, articles, anything else, throughout the year, that is completely fine.
